Self Affirmations

What are Self-Affirmations?

Affirmations are a powerful tool to help you manifest changes in your life, increase confidence and discover your inner-power. These positive statements can counteract some of our self-limiting beliefs and negative thoughts which prevent us from living to our fullest potential.

When you verbally state, or write down your positive affirmations, you are sending a message to yourself and the Universe that you are ready for an influx of light in your life.  And when you send positive messages to yourself instead of negative ones, you will continue to enter higher and higher states of being, attracting more and more positive outcomes.

Self-Affirmations Benefits

We can be so hard on ourselves.  In fact, we can be downright viscous when we speak to ourselves with negative self-talk and put downs.  You would never speak to a friend like that, so why do we do it to ourselves?  Self-Affirmations can help to change the tone and voice in your head.  The one that says “You aren’t good enough to achieve XXX” now says “You ARE worth it and it is your divine right to have it”.

Positive thoughts and affirmations help you vibrate at a higher level – attracting other high vibe people and experiences into your life.  As you maintain a regular practice of speaking these affirmations out loud you’ll begin to notice that things will just start flowing your way naturally.  You will be grateful for these changes, and in turn there will be a hint of gratitude in everything you do, which will only lead to more and more positivity in all aspects of your life.

The Science Behind Self-Affirmations

In The Psychology of Change: Self-Affirmation and Social Psychological Intervention, researchers study self-affirmations and how they may have lasting benefits by creating a positive feedback loop improving education, health, and relationship outcomes, with benefits that sometimes persist for months and years.

In a separate study, brain scans were taken to examine the neural mechanisms of self-affirmations.  Participants who were affirmed (compared with participants who did not perform affirmations) demonstrated increased activity in key areas of the brain’s self-processing & valuation systems when reflecting on future-oriented core values.

Self-Affirmations: How To

The first step to incorporate affirmations into your daily life is finding the statements which feel right to you.  Think about areas in your life where you feel anxious, fearful, worried or when you are critical of yourself.  Now write out an affirmation that addresses those issues.

Your self-judging belief:

My career isn’t going anywhere because I am not smart enough.

Your positive affirmation:

I am competent, capable and bring value to my role as a XXX

There are a ton of resources online to find strong, powerful words if you’re affirmation isn’t resonating.  We love this list of positive affirmations from beauty brand Kora Organics.   Or google image search “positive affirmations” to see some of the beautiful graphic art inspired by affirmations.  After you’ve decided on your affirmation, write it down a few more times and speak it verbally to make sure it feels good to you.

Ok, so this part may feel completely awkward but just trust –  it really helps!  Say your affirmation out loud over and over a few times a day.  Repeat it as many times as necessary to reinforce the belief.  You can do this during your commute (if you drive), while you’re getting ready for work or school or while you’re cooking dinner.  You can also try repeating your affirmations while looking in the mirror, so you can see yourself.

Next, write your affirmation repeatedly in a journal – or anywhere you have a paper and pen handy.  Add a post-it to your desk or bathroom mirror so you are reminded to repeat the affirmation daily.  Or use an app to create a custom wallpaper or phone background
